The new Zephyrhills Public Library is a replacement for a smaller, outdated 1960s-era library. The new
building was built on the same site as the former library, adjacent to the old building, so that the library was able to remain in operation throughout construction. Upon completion of the new building, the existing library was demolished and site work was completed. Because of the building’s siting, and through careful design of the building’s massing, the team was able to minimize the impact to the site and existing trees. The new library is located next door to the Zephyrhills City Hall. Because of its prominent location, the City desired a dignified, civic building with a historic character befitting the City of Zephyrhills. For this reason, the architect selected traditional methods and materials, featuring utility size face brick and cast-stone veneer over the structural concrete masonry substrate, allowing us to incorporate various brick details and corbeling derived from traditional brick architecture. Patrons approach the building from the east on 8th Street, through a civic-scaled, arched brick entry. This s mirrored with a Palladian window on the west side, providing a visible presence from Gall Boulevard, the main road through Zephyrhills. Inside, the main space of the building is a peaked atrium oriented in the east- west direction, with clerestory glass, large bowl pendant light fixtures, and supported by articulated exposed steel trusses. The historic character of the building is emphasized through the use of wood moldings, chair rail, and wall base, as well as traditional light fixtures and door hardware. Matching stained wood casework and furniture complement the finishes. This attention to detail helps to contribute to the building as a locally recognizable landmark and a source of civic pride. “Everything flowed well and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we had a great group of people working on the project,” says Vicki Elkins, Library Director. |
