Highland Avenue

The City of Melbourne was looking to pave their dirt Highland Ave parking lot, reduce contaminants from stormwater runoff into the Indian River Lagoon and handle flooding issues from an adjacent alleyway.  If they used standard impervious asphalt pavement, they would have to significantly reduce the size of the parking lot to retain the stormwater and utilize other methods to reduce contaminants.  The producer presented the PaveDrain system, a permeable articulating concrete block system with a patented arch reservoir and open-aggregate base.  The design for the 9,000 SF parking lot by E Sciences out of Orlando was able to provide infiltration, stormwater storage and significantly reduce contaminants for the 1.4 acre site.  In fact, according to E Sciences calculations; the total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorous levels would be reduced by a whopping 95%.  All this while maintaining the original size of the parking lot and provide a durable concrete surface with a unique color pattern.  This was a win-win situation for everyone including Mother Nature!
