These are two separate hardscape signs for a new commercial development project in Nocatee, FL. The smaller one is at the entrance into the future development and the larger one is off one of main four lane highways. There are two different color precast panels/ coping used on this project, white and tan, which required two different colors of mortar. The Precast itself had several different types and finishes. This included a smooth finish on the white and tan pieces, and a ribbed finish on the tan which included both a smooth and etch finish. Underneath the precast there are three different wythes of CMU to construction the different elevations for the precast to hang on. The use of the different precast colors and finishes made this a very attractive sign.
What made this project especially difficult is that this being a new development there was no water (to mix mortar, clean out mixer between mortar color changes, and to mix grout cell fill). The large sign was directly off a 4-lane highway so the FDOT did not allow us to use the shoulder of the road to access the sign. All the material had to be brought down and old access road and through some fields approximately one mile. No truck could access this so all material (including water) and manpower had to be moved with a rough terrain forklift and a 4-wheel drive gator. With the three different wythes of CMU and the required rebar inspections each CMU wythe had to be constructed and inspected separately and then scaffold moved and the next CMU wythe constructed.
